Ok a few more points, I had a bit of mixed bag with this one, on very first impression a lot of it did seem to blend or remind me of past Taylor songs/production or even other artists that Jack and Aaron had worked with, although they were still catchy in and of themselves and had some variance in melody still, so it can be seen in two lights at the same time iykwim. and Also Jack and Aaron respectively still came out with some standouts like Fortnight and So High School which had some different flavours on this record. Some of the songs were a little more on the shorter side, or some of the lyrics which could be attributed to the same topics about the 3 relationships of late (and sometimes some songs seemed like they could be a composite) maybe went on a bit much and had some clunkier moments/sounding a bit too wordy like it could be perhaps trying to play up the whole 'Tortured poets' angle theme a little, whilst others I thought she wrote more evenly well on. OTOH theres also the level of perhaps tiresome saturation with it all to some that dont particularly care for it and finding ultra personal lyrics kinda fatiguing with her atm. Theres a sliding scale of where Taylor has gotten to with the fame and her personal life becoming a circus in the public eye, and I wrote a bit more about how that might be viewed as either being self aware and tongue in cheek (particularly with some of the song titles and lyric moments on this album) leaning in to pander to her audience (some sections of which are perhaps a little enthusiastic shall we say at times) and she knows really eat all this up, or, she could be caught in that out of touch relatability with regular life since she became famous young and built up all this backstory of her love life and feuds with Kimye etc all her career, either which way if you want to remove all that from your interpretation of the lyrics, songs like Guilty as Sin, Who's afraid of Little old me, Smallest Man and Thank You Aimee (with some caveats because some parts seem pretty specific) might become a little more palatable I guess YMMV. haha.

Part 2 mini thoughts: Back to the songs musically, I liked the groove of several songs like imgonnagetyouback (similar wordplay isnt that big of a deal for any copright/interpolation although the timing is sus I tend to agree), The Alchemy, Down Bad etc. There were some vauguely Country Taylor sounds on ones like But Daddy I Love Him, I Can Fix Him. She sounded a bit Lana esque in the vocals on bits of Fortnight and So Long London. So High School was a bit cheesy in the lyrics (but also hitting that nostalgic funnybone with the references to American Pie and GTA lol), but the musical vibe I liked and it reminded me a little of something 90's like Kiss Me by Sixpence or something. I read somewhere The names in Sam Marcus and friends (lol) could be reference to Matty's supposed being Bi and Taylor wondering who he's with now just thoughtfully or something, Cassandra I explained is from Greek mythology, 'Cassandra Truth' is used in tropes and metaphors to describe where someone raises warnings and stuff that could be valid, but they arent believed/dismissed kinda similar to boy who cried wolf fable. Its been debated whether Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist was supposed to be a sarcastic in joke between them or something haha Although maybe he could capitalise off it maybe by putting something out. Anyways I think This was as I said a bit of a mixed bag but between just TTPD and Cowboy Carter in terms of AOTY contention, I think CC exucuted its vision a little more focused like, although there was rumours some of the Grammy voters didnt actually listen to Midnights and voted just based on Taylor's big year with TIME and the Eras tour and everything. But also YMMV on awards shows actual merit, but also theres still some room left in the eiligibility period and what else could be nominated, but I'd give it to Beyonce out of these two. I also think that Midnights (Standard version) 'pop's a little bit more than TTPD as a whole, just that theres a lot of tracks here (and possibly a few more laid back songs sonically) spreads it out a bit so on the surface/taken as a whole it dosent seem as in your face IYKWIM. Anyways that'll do for now. Another fun ep!

Mixing familiar lyrics/elements with more experimental things is actually a smart way to approach a song like this as an artist. She’s singing the song to herself to unfreeze her self from her own ego.

  • @DarylMemetic
    @DarylMemetic 15 днів тому

I’d give this about an 8. all of the songs have their moments, and on the whole I felt it was a bit more cohesive and polished album than some of the lengthier songs from the 80’s mixtape. But also Its interesting to read that this got a bit of a ‘sell out’ response from some at the time because sonically I didn’t think it was all that derivative from some of the Thrash stuff, although it could also be a bit of ‘It’s popular and mainstream now, it sucks’ or 'cool to dump on/take the p out of' like a meme. Anyways, Some great riffs and choruses here and I found myself remembering and humming little bits and pieces from quite a few of these later on. I remember Casey Donovan (Australian Idol winner 2004) sang Nothing Else Matters on a special non comp episode during the show IIRC, and she even included it as the B-Side to her winner’s single Listen With Your Heart. I like the part when it goes higher. The Unforgiven I thought had a good groove to it throughout, so put it at my number 1, and Enter Sandman has a great chorus.

Don’t Tread On Me was groovy too, did any of you catch the West Side Story ‘America’ sample at the very beginning? I thought that was funny and cool Haha.

Here’s my ranking below:

@@DarylMemetic i always wondered where ive heard that intro to dont tread on me lol, great call. a friend of mine played this cd while we were hanging out back in 96', and it wasnt until nothing else matters played that i stopped whatever it was we were doing and listened. the rest of the album and their discography has grown on me over the years. loved the black album and i will always appreciate its importance to me for being the first of many albums that made a fan out of me to hard rock and metal genres. if you were interested in hearing more of metallica then theres two ways you could go; the first that i would recommend would be the master of puppets album. highly regarded as their magnum opus, its my favorite album and really an amazing work of music that was recorded back in 86' when they were 23 years old. now everyone has their tastes in music and i respect that, if thrash type metal and heavier rock kind of sounds isnt your cup of tea than this may not be an easy listen at first. it wasnt for me, ill admit (after hearing nothing else matters for the first time i became a fan. but when i went to get my first cd of this band, the album wasnt anywhere to be found. so i blindly picked this one instead because i didnt have the opportunities or access to purchasing music at my leisure back then.) so lets just say that nothing else matters is easily one of their "lighter" songs.....and in contrast, theres 2 or 3 songs on this album that could be defined as their "heaviest". theres one ballad type song and an instrumental. the other half are on the middle of that spectrum somewhere. but im only saying this because it might be more palatable if you have a better idea of what to expect, but honestly whatever i say should be taken with a grain of salt... except this: i very highly recommend listening to this album. regardless of anyones preference in music, this one has a tendency to grow on you. considered to be the goat of metal albums and the first metal album to be preserved in the united states registry. my other recommendation would be the album after the "black album": load. very underrated, this album continues on down their path of a more commercial, radio play type of music. james's voice is probably at its pinnacle right here, his guitar riffs are more of a groove, less speed and technicality. the solos are not as long and more tasteful. the drums going for a more pop music kind of sound. i believe theres 12 tracks on this one as well. in my opinion....half of them are forgettable and only one (maybe two) of these songs is in my top 20 metallica greatest hits. but this album is still underrated. king nothing, until it sleeps, hero of the day, and mama said; are great songs.

Like Beyonce DIL I wrote a longer thoughts comment on the Discord before this episode was released to youtube. Also now that theres been an update to the tour being rejigged and retitled to being more like her Vegas residency about Greatest hits than about this album specifically, and also now Taylor's TTPD has come out and the topic of personalised lyrics in album projects have given me some thoughts of comparison, I'll do a bit of a condensed version and update for here (and also email the podcast so at least there's one reply to the running joke in subsequent episodes for now haha. So just based on the music alone I'd give it around a 6.5, with the visuals maybe around a 7. I thought the subtle sampling was used well and didnt dominate the entire song (Cry me a river, Jenny From The Block and Chris Isaak Wicked Game a couple examples), Musically it did call back in a few places to the kinda early 00's R&B grooves of J Lo's earlier albums and the album This is Me Then (2002) that this album is more/less the follow up to, and that album also used some more extensive sampling in parts from 70's/80's R&B as well. Lyrically though even that album had a bit more span and wasn't as explicitly about Ben, whereas this one is a little bit more, but also has songs such as Rebound (which I was surprised you ranked lower I personally think its one of the Catchiest) thats also illustrated as part of a different previous relationship perhaps in the short film. On the other hand I can understand how a few different factors may contribute to this album being seen as lackluster or too self-indulgent by casual listeners. One being the big gap between her last studio album A.K.A. in 2014 (she had the soundtrack to her movie Marry Me in 2022, but that was more like A Star Is Born kinda thing, her character was a singer in that) and also the delays between announcement of this project and the album finally arriving. Another being that some people may not be as invested in the whole Ben thing, whereas you compare something like TTPD and you'll find mixed response from those that are right into the backstory vs those that don't care for it and think its a little over the top being soooo in love with this rekindled romance. I did have a thought and some half formulated spec future fan fic style idea of if Taylor Swift put out something like this with accomanying visuals either now, or perhaps after a long gap and how it might be percieved. Although it may just depend on the public appetite for different artists and be a little subjective too IYKWIM, as example some may view their styles of artistry differently, Taylor is given more street cred from those that value the songwriting and musicianship more, whereas J Lo's dancing and acting may be seen as stronger than her vocals (or long ago history of ghost singing the choruses being constantly brought up to discredit her because its a bit of a meme). J Lo albums wise did have a previous lull (I would say after 2005's REBIRTH yielding 'Get Right', 2007 when she released both a spanish Language album and and English one (BRAVE, which had the lead single 'Do It Well') I dont recall being quite as big a splash as her first 3 and the remix album, She had that kindof mini 'comeback' in 2011 with 'On The Floor' which may have kindof been a bit of a fluke as it was quite basic lyrically as a dance bop built around a sample from an 80's song, and anything featuring Pitbull was a good chance of being big at that time. so much so, She then collabed with him on a further 4 or so singles over the next few years, and also 2 with Flo Rida. After AKA she had a string of droplet singles. Anyways all that to one side, The short film definitely looks like $20 million or whatever that she put into it, and I got a little kick out of the cameos, nods and references to her past relationships and career such as Fat Joe, Jane Fonda and even Post Malone (he's had a busy year so far!) that the GP viewers/listeners mightn't care for. Musically on initial few listens I did groove with my top half there were a few catchy parts, I'd say my top 6 or so are fairly even. Heres my ranking below.

I wrote a longer comments review back when before this released to UA-cam on the Discord, but a few condensed points for here: I'd give this around a 7. I think the singles were pretty well chosen (CIL> Baby Boy > MM&I >Naughty Girl) then some with a more laid back groove to them. A few samples going on too. And also The Closer I was a later single also from Luther Vandross' Album. Lesser remembered fact also is that Beyonce didnt debut solo technically with Crazy In Love, in 2002 she had both 'Work It Out' from Austin Powers and featured on Jay-Z's '03 Bonnie & Clyde'. Usher had a cameo in the 'Naughty Girl' video. It and Baby boy had a bit of a middle eastern etc you could say kinda feel in the instrumentation, and with Sean Paul a bit of reggae/dancehall. Others had a bit of 70's/80's R&B kinda sound, some horns and jazzy kinda sounds in CIL etc. DC3's album Survivor (2001) does hold the 'original' Part 1 DIL song, as well as yeah a Part 1 & 2 situtation with the Independent Women song which has an interesting backstory. After that album they each went and did this solo projects, then reformed for one more album 'Destiny Fulfilled' (November 2004) which toured through 2005 and they also had a GH album that year. Beyonce put out her 2nd album 'B'Day' in September 2006. Feature Big Boi on Hip Hop Star you may recognise as one half of OutKast, THta one was a bit grungier, and Sean Paul (on Baby Boy) had quite a big year in 2003 also, with his own song 'Get Busy' and featuring on Blu Cantrell's 'Breathe'. He has a bit of a distinctive singing style. He's popped up every now and again since, having big hits such as on Sia's 'Cheap Thrills' (2016) and Clean Bandit's 'Rockabye' (2017). Signs was catchy and an easy way to remember the order of the Zodiac haha. Similar to list songs as Manatees referred to if a song lists something like days of the week, like Craig David '7 Days' or Jung Kook 'Seven'. Bit of a ranking in the reply:

Sia's journey with her appearance was riddled with deep-seated insecurity and a struggle with self-worth. She believed herself to be ugly, leading her to hide behind a wig, desperate to shield herself from others' scrutiny and the harsh judgments she imposed upon herself. Yet, within the veil of anonymity, something remarkable unfolded. The wig, once a mere accessory, transformed into a symbol of her humility, resilience, and authenticity. It turned her into an enigma, a goddess shrouded in mystery, captivating us with her music and her indomitable spirit. When she finally shed the wig, it was as though she had bared her soul to the world, revealing the raw beauty and vulnerability that lay beneath, triumphing over her self-perception issues. Her hauntingly beautiful voice alone possessed the power to move mountains and touch the deepest recesses of our souls. And though time may have left its mark, our hearts will forever resonate with her voice. For Sia is more than just a singer; she is a beacon of hope, a testament to the power of music to heal and to move souls, and a reminder that true beauty lies not on the surface of our appearance but in the depths of our hearts. Sia was working on a track for Rihanna. The title came from her book of song ideas: "When I saw a chandelier, I thought I could write a song about swinging from the chandelier. A party anthem of some sort. But as I was writing it, it turned into a song about my battles with addiction, inadvertently." But the moment she realized the personal significance of the song, Sia felt she "couldn’t give it away." I believe the song is much deeper. It is an existential anthem for all of us who feel trapped in the cycle of short-term gratification, lost in the maze of this absurd existence. Each dawn casting its relentless light on our darkest regrets of unfulfilled potential. It is about desperately trying to numb the pain of meaninglessness as we realize that happiness is nothing but a cruel joke. We're all swinging from The Chandelier, holding on for dear life in a precarious dance between hope and despair.

I’d give this about an 8 I think. I’d say my top 4 or 5 are pretty interchangeable, 23 could be higher if it had a good edit version. These racks I thought were pretty consistently groovable with throughout whereas I thought some of the middle tracks like Pain, Work and Kill had some parts I really liked, other sections were a little mid, or I thought some of my top few were similar but I may have slightly preferred (and so I was a little surprised at first seeing that Pain and Work were singles over say Just Tonight or Nothing Wrong, although re listening I can see how they also had catchy radio friendly parts.

Anyway as I said on discord, Apparently about 4 songs from this album (and also some other Jimmy songs including the band performing in show were used in Season 2 of One Tree Hill, so I may have heard bits of these back when I watched that. I also thought some of these tracks gave me slight vibes of some other pop/rock songs/albums from the mid 2000’s, maybe a few Aussie bands/artists too; and I chuckled when Mirrors said Alt because as we discussed back when I gave you the 2000’’s Aussie Alt Rock’ mixtape, that can be a bit of a blurry and subjective descriptor as bit of pop rock can creep into that sometimes as well.

But (and I may pop a few suggestions in the discord or something later) some of the songs here reminded me of songs by Aussie bands Kisschasy, Something With Numbers, The Getaway Plan, or Gyroscope. Maybe even Snow Patrol slightly - I’d recommend their 2006 album EYES OPEN, which ‘Chasing Cars’ came from you reacted to in my Grey’s Anatomy/50 Shades mixtape and songs from that album soundtracked a whole host of TV shows in the later 2000’s.

My familiarity is probably similar that big song from the album before this IIRC. Anyways heres a bit of a ranking for the moment below.

the god that failed was number 12??!!!! ....interesting.... the intro and changeups are my favorite and the solo is exceptional... but i suppose its the meaning that really holds me i guess. its about james mother and her convictions to her religion and her faith that god would heal her, she had cancer and died when james was 15 or 16 years old and shunned medical treatment because her church regarded any medical treatment was taboo and insisted that her faith with god was enough to heal her.

and thank you for your channel! ive only been subscribed for a month or two now, i had just discovered the weeknd (im kinda set in my ways as far as musical genres and taste goes, and stuck in the more older eras of music, mostly 80s and 90s. big Michael Jackson fan when i was a kid) and one of your reactions to his songs brought me in. its a great channel and has introduced me to other artists and genres that i typically wouldnt give the time of day. so i was pleasantly surprised to see those two videos you posted and wonder how i missed them since im a lil late to the party. not gonna lie, when you played some of those riffs on your guitar i had to do the same, i knew the majority of riffs from this album at one point in time but its been a while since i played most of them, with the exception of nothing else matters and i play that one everyday still, and the unforgiven. sounded great and that acoustic came in really clean! ive been playing for over 20 years off and on and to this day i still cannot play master of puppets at its actual tempo, i think its 218 bpm, with any consistency, downpicking the entire thing just like james... the dude just isnt human. now if i warm up for an hour or more and the planets have aligned then i got it at a humble 190 bpm lol. then my right arm is useless afterwards but its worth it. thanks for the response and the time you put in, im always checking in on the channel and trying out new artists!

i love that you grew up playing guitar and these were your influences and first riffs. because i was the same way. nothing else matters was my introduction to Metallica and what inspired me to play the guitar.....lol... so imagine my horror and disappointment when i went to buy my first cd and the black album was sold out. ( i was 14...so it was 1997, internet was just barely coming out and its not like it is today hahahaha..... any information on metallica at the time was from friends and magazines, and i lived in the middle of nowhere, idaho, so..... yeah....) but i lived almost an hour from the closest music shop and it could be another month before i got the opportunity to get anything... so i picked one of their albums and figured what the hell... also, i had only listened to that one song, over and over, and didnt give any of the other songs a chance at that time. lol, so now imagine only hearing nothing else matters.....then listening to battery.....then master of puppets.... hahaha. i was mortified and pissed off i spent what lil money i possessed, especially at 14 years old, and having very little access to any music with my sights set on this one song, probably their most softest and lightest track.... and get their heaviest and fastest album of all... but when you are at that age and i only had a radio and a portable cd player with a couple cds that had been overplayed to beyond any healthy proportions.... i listened despite my distaste.... its crazy how things like that have the potential of changing your outlook on things... it was probably months later that i got the black album... and it was great and i loved it.... but i liked the master of puppets album better now.

Cliff Burton was the first bassist for Metallica, for albums kill em all, ride the lightning, and master of puppets. on their master puppets tour I believe it was in Sweden is where the accident happened and he lost his life. Cliff Burton was a protege of extreme talent probably and arguably to be one of the best bass metal players of all time. Their master of puppets album is heavily influenced by him and contributed to the writing of many of its tracks. Lars and James both moved from their homes to be closer to Cliff Burton as they looked up to him and knew he was essential for the band. It can't be emphasized enough the impact, the direction, and the motivation that Metallica had because of cliff. also he never played with a pick. the master of puppets album was selected to be preserved in the United States Registry and was also part of the data that was stored on one of the Voyager probes ( i think thats what it was called) we sent out into space in search of other life. Regarded as their greatest album by many, their instrumental track "orion" is a great listen. well done guys, i really enjoyed listening to your analysis of their earlier work. and i love that you picked "jump in the fire", one of their underrated tracks, and the "four horseman" is a must listen from their first album. i also recommend: orion, leper messiah, and disposable heroes from the master of puppets album.

Cool idea! Same I’ve only really heard of some of the names of songs that sound familiar and maybe one or two of their big songs which I think come from after this period, so It was interesting to hear this 80’s stuff from them. It kinda reminded me a little of like AC/DC and that 70’s 80’s kinda rock with some hair metal style thrown in. Some of the Guitar bits even reminded me a little of the Power Rangers theme opening song LOL.

It was interesting on the lengths of the songs, it can be hit or miss subjectively a little bit, some of them had a few little switch ups or sections, could be good with an edit version. Then again you have songs like Bohemian Rhapsody that pulls this kinda thing off. I can also see how later live versions or slight reworkings might give it a different flavour. That Symphonic thing sounds a little bit like Evanescence’s Synthesis album as mentioned earlier, which they did a big tour of.

On a similar note you could do this kinda thing I reckon with something like Kylie Minogue’s first 4 albums (1988-1991) under the PWL label or Madonna’s first 4 which were all in the 80’s over a slightly longer span, having a bit of similar 80’s/early 90’s kinda sounds and production running through them. In Kylie’s case for example She’s also done some updated live versions and stuff like for instance Locomotion still sounding 80’s but I saw a recent TV thing she did where it was backed by the music from 2007’s ‘The One’. Or some of the reworking on the ‘Abbey Road Sessions’ side album (2012) like a slower, jazzier version of ‘I Should Be So Lucky’.

It’s also interesting to see that One was their first music video, 4 albums in in 1988/89, then having that big hit with the 1991 album. Anyway’s I’d give this list about a 6.5 or 7, there were some good bits, but I did find it hard to rank due to the lengths and some of them blending a bit on first few listens (some felt I dunno perhaps a bit more melodically/lyrically focused and to the point than others which went on with the guitar sections and musicality a bit more? IYKWIM), but I’d put it something like this for the moment:

This song is probably one of my favorites in general. It's such a mix of what made them so unique to begin with while also pushing what "The Open Door" so special. The lyrics of the song are simple but powerful in finally laying something that was once beautiful gone toxic and rotten to rest by ascending from it, taking all the blame and refusing to 'hold them back' manages to be both scathing and above it all. Borrowing the Lacrimosa movement from Mozart's Requiem Mass and setting a metal ballad to the literal classical funeral piece is just a piece of genius on so many levels.
